Denmark awards “Best Tequila of the Year” & “Best Mezcal of the Year 2022”!
Interest has never been greater in participating in the danish Tequila of the Year and Mezcal of the Year 2022 awards.
Tequila has become THE biggest spirit category in the US!
Mexico produced a staggering 352.1 million litres of tequila for export in 2022 alone.
Tequila is becoming more and more popular and the Danes are gaining a better understanding that tequila is much more than cheap Sierra tequila..
“Tequila of the Year and Mezcal of the Year” is a popular award that has been given since 2016.
Tequila.dk collects the best bottles available in Denmark, across importers. This year the bottles are supplied by Juuls.dk, Macy.dk and Tequila.dk.
The winners are chosen through four tastings at the “the Agave Court”, a free event focused on spreading knowledge about tequila and mezcal and the awarding of Tequila of the Year and Mezcal of the Year.
The winner of Tequila of the Year 2022:
Jorongo Tequila
The taste is soft, mild and round with great sweetness. Jorongo Extra Anejo has a good balance between barrel notes of oak, coconut, honey and subtle notes of fruit and baked agave. The aroma is rich and sweet with notes of pear, baked agave, a little sweet pepper and caramel.
Background:
Jorongo Tequila is made at the same distillery (Nom 1545) as the better known Calle 23 and the distillery is known for making no-nonsense quality tequila at a reasonable price.
Jorongo is a small brand that has been around for a few years, but has never caught on in a big way. A fate that outlives thousands of tequila brands.
The Jorongo brand came into being in the early 2000s and was originally sold in a very exclusive handmade stoneware bottle. The target was museum shops and airports. Later, a simpler bottle was chosen – the one we see now.
The winner of Mezcal of the Year 2022:
Scorpion Mezcal
Scorpion Mezcal tastes, like most mezcals, smoky agave. However, in this case, the smoky flavour is less prominent. The aging adds a very delicious flavor where the subtle nuances of vanilla and ginger blend perfectly with the deep tobacco-like smokiness and the light airy and green flavor of the agave.
Each bottle contains a small scorpion, so of course it is the scorpion from which the mezcal takes its name. It adds nothing to the flavour, but it undeniably adds to the drama of the bottle.
Background:
Scorpion Mezcal comes from the state of Oaxaca in Mexico. Made from the Espadina Agave, it’s a classic mezcal through and through!
Scorpion Mezcal maintains a very high quality and is a solid product. It comes in a beautiful and well proportioned bottle coquettishly decorated with a small sombrero. All bottles are hand numbered.
Scorpion is a brand that was started in 1999, so it is among the “old brands” now and is a family-owned and operated brand.
